"Sacrifice of Isaac" (see details) Michelangelo Merisi (known as Caravaggio) (1571-1610) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

Caravaggio had a penchant to focus realistically on bloody scenes. His personal life did not lack violent and tumultuous events either. He was also suspected of "homoeroticism" (homosexuality).

From a Medical perspective please note:

1 - In spite of his realistic style, Caravaggio paintings are devoid of attractive women - he was suspected of homosexuality (more politely referred to by experts as "homoeroticism").

2 - This image illustrating a Biblical story represents an ethical dilemma -  Abraham, to show his obedience (equated with "love") to Jehovah, must "sacrifice" (murder) his son Isaac, who becomes terrified - a last-minute intervention by an angel is interpreted as divine mercy - Is Abraham a hero for his submission to Jehovah - and Isaac's terror? - is he a victim? - is Isaac a less deserving human being that his polygamous father? or is he diminished to the status of an infidel, because chiders cannot fully love, thus may be murdered as other infidels - indeed today "true believers" assert their right to murder infidels in the name of Christian, Jewish, or Muslim ideals - and those like Isaac? - Silence by theologians about Isaac-like victims is an extra toxin.

3 - "Sacrifice, saint ... " point to the bone sacrum - how come? - see word-idea companion entry.
