PRIMAVERA - THREE BEAUTIES (TO BE CHOSEN BY PARIS) - AND OTHER MYTHS

"La Primavera" (see details A | B | C | D | E), 1480 Alessandro Filipepi (known as Botticelli) (1445 - 1510) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

There is little doubt that spring is the season of love - announced by the songs of birds and opening of blooms. The allegorical figures represent the sphere of burgeoning fertility - longer days - more daylight influences all living forms including humans - hormones rise - June is the month of brides, and by then surely some are already "expecting" a "jun-ior" - this composition is rich in allegories - in blue is windy Zephyr (as blue as a sapphire) holding on to "Chloris" (which should be shown in green to denote chlorophyll, chlorine), as reflected in the emerging greenery evident during early Primavera or spring - the fertilizing wind blown by Zephir may, perhaps, impregnate Chloris and produce Flora, a paternity easily disputed (see related images) - in any case, Flora is almost the whole center of attention except for Venus standing next to her - both are overflown by an Erote - as Aphrodite or Venus who blesses the dance by the three Graces whose beauty and grace is an aphrodisiac worth guarding, as is represented here by Mars standing on the left.
