DENIS DIDEROT - FAMOUS FRENCH THINKER
"Denis Diderot", 1769 Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806)
Pioneer encyclopedist and famous French thinker. His monumental work is the Encyclopedia, or Cyclopedia, a project fiercely opposed by the Roman Church. In 1759 the Encyclopedia was formally suppressed. Diderot was paid 120 pounds sterling for his monumental work. Voltaire comment was... an army contractor makes 800 pounds in a day! (not much has changed since).
