"Cardinale Leopoldo de'Medici (1617-1675) - Leopoldus Cosmae II Medici " (see related A | B) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

The overgrowth of the mandible or rather the relative under-development of the mid-face (maxilla) are evident and characteristic of an autosomal dominant gene mutation expressed by many members of the Habsburg (or Hapbsburg) clan during many generations. The question here is about the prominent "hump" and size of the nose. In my view, such is also a concurrent sign observed in many other individuals with the "Habsburg Jaw phenotype" (syndrome). Those who doubt my assertion should explore other images of members of the Habsburg clan who have manifested altered jaw-maxilla proportions. Many of such portraits are posted on this site, and others are displayed by museums. What is the point? - virtually all publications and reports, there is no emphasis on the characteristic nose associated with this mutation - another sign less common is the eversion or ectropion of the lower eye lid.
