Vulcan was maimed (disabled, incapacitated, crippled, mangled, etc.), and implies that the cause is violence. "Maim" also implies an injury causing permanent damage (mutilate, battered, etc.) and points to notions of mayhem. This term is no longer popular.
Vulcan is the Roman name for Hephaestus, the god of fire, forges, and was the godly artisan, in particular, of sculptures. Rejected by his mother Hera, because he was "imperfect", he was eventually thrown out of Olympus to land on Earth. He was not attractive and had to marry the beautiful Venus or Aphrodite to prevent other gods from fighting for her - but Venus had an affair with Mars (and Adonis whom she "adored") ...
