In the Roman Empire, Mithraism was more popular than Christianity. The barbarians who destroyed Rome were already, for the most part, Christians. These barbarous Christians were not particularly tolerant of other views and fostered the destruction "all pagan" and "paganism" in Rome. Note that in Ukrainian, "pahan" and "pohano" stand for pagan and "bad".
