CLASSIC ATTITUDES AND POSES

"Aphrodite Bathing (Roman copy of a Hellenistic original attributed to Doidalsas c. 300 BC)" (see related A) British Museum, London, England

Another version of Venus kneeling - obviously an illustration of a classic pose favoured by artists - artists selected and popularized classic "Attitudes" represented by sculptors and painters. This inspired admirers, such as Lady Emma Hamilton, to replicate these intert representations into living ones - she "performed attitudes" which later were incorporated in modern ballet in particular by Isadora Duncan who clearly was inspired by Lady Hamilton. She in turn, was inspired by her husband, the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples, Sir William Hamilton, when the excavations of Pompei were at their height - he sold the Portland vase, now at the British Museum depicting "classic attitudes". Lady Emma Hamilton and Admiral Horation Nelson developed a deep passion and both had a tragic end.
