Temptation and a Duality between Evil and Sainthood

"Self-Portrait" (see related A), 1889 Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C, USA

The life of Gauguin was tempestuous and dramatic as was his relationship with Vincent van Gogh.  Here he partrays himself facing the apples of temptation and a choice toward sainthood or sin. He chose both and so was his sexuality that fluctuated from abuse to worship. This theme is also illustrated in a a companion image.
