CONSOLATION ATONE FORTUNE MISFORTUNE DISGRACE MODEL CRITIC CHILD TEACH SOUL

"The Gods ordered Time to Console the Unfortunates"
Josef Joubert (1754 - 1824)

Josef or Joseph Joubert became known as a French moralist who was interested in human nature. He wrote in aphoristic style but did not author books. His letters were compiled and published posthumously in 1838 as "Recueil des pensees of M. Joubert" by his friend Francois Rene Chateaubriand (1768 - 1848 - seen as the founder of the Romantic French Literature). The compilation gave rise to many aphorisms extant today such as, among other,

"Children need models rather than critics.
To teach is to learn twice.
Imagination is the eye of the soul."
