SCYTHIAN JEWELS

"Greco-Scythian Jewels from Crimea, Ukraine" (see related A | B | C | D | E | F), IV BC Romish Museum, Cologne (Koln), Germany

Khersonesus, Kerch, or Kertch, now called Crimea is a well known region where fabulous treasures of ancient jewels have been excavated and continue to be found. One among many famous ancient Greek colonies was Panticapaeum founded in VI c. BC by the town of Miletus. It was conquered by Mithridates the Great, king of Pontus about 100 BC. Later, the region was invaded by colonists from Italy, mainly Venice and Genoa. Since early times, colonists were eager to trade with Scythian gold artisans and later with those who inherited their taste and skills which can be appreciated by viewing the Scythian Gold Art Collection exhibited in Kyiv, Ukraine.
