GALEN

"Galen of Pergamon (129-217) A most famous physician of Antiquity " (see related A)

Also known as Aelius Galenus or Claudius Galenus. He is credited for the spread and adoption of Hippocratic Medicine across Europe and its evolution toward Scientific Modern Medicine.

The talent, skills, and extensive knowledge of philosophy of Galen were amply recognized by his contemporaries - Emperor Marcus Aurelius described him as "Primum sane medicorum esse, philosophorum autem solum" (first among doctors and unique among philosophers) Galen amalgamated notions stemming from Apollo as the healer of humanity, from Aesculapius, who linked medicine with medical ethics as reflected in the principle "first do no harm", and from Minerva, who linked Medicine with Wisdom. After the collapse of Rome, the prodigious writings and teachings of Galen largely disappeared in the Latin world, while in Bizantium Galenic Medicine was widely disseminated. When Bizantium fell, Galenic Medicine was adopted by the Arabs and spread across Europe.

Christianity tolerated Aesculapian Medicine but claimed jurisdiction for itself to address spiritual ailments. In my view, the greatest achievement of Galen was to sustain the view that there is no distinction between the mental and the physical health nor their ailments as stressed by the well known adage.

"In Corpore Sano - Mente Sana".
