CLUBFOOT - PES EQUINOVARUS

"Le Pied-bot (Club Foot)" (see details A | B) (see related A | B), 1642 Jusepe de Ribera (known as Jose de Ribera) (1591-1652) Louvre Museum, Paris, France

Note: many lame people have to resort to either begging (for the Love of God as depicted here) or in developed societies, a dependency on public charity. This congenital anomaly is prominent among children in developing countries - a reflection of pregnancy complications and limited pediatric interventions. Clubfoot, talipes or pes equinovarus is relatively common and may represent a deformation (easier to correct) or malformation (harder to treat). Among the causes is oligohydramnios (deficit of amniotic fluid) which constrains fetal motion. The same is true for infants in breech presentation. Physicians should be familiar with the non-surgical therapy method known as "Ponseti Method".
