"Archeological Roman Site " (see details A | B | C | D) Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy

The term “amphi” implies “around” or “both sides”. When combined with “theater” or “teatro”, it adds the sense “show”.  Ancient theaters were semi-circular open sites for “shows”.

In Medicine, a  surgical “amphitheater” is also a semi-circular space for junior or aspiring surgeons to view “surgical shows”. In Spanish, the preferred term is “quirofano” for surgical operation rooms. This points to Chiron, who trained  Aesculapius in “manual” Medical skills or surgical techniques. The term, currently, is at the root of Chiropractic or “hands-on” Medicine. Chiro denotes “hand” or “mano”, as in “manual” or “handy” as in “handy – book”.  For more, see the “word-idea” AMPHI.
