"Tha Calumny of Apelles", 1495 Alessandro Filipepi (known as Botticelli) (1445 - 1510) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

This depiction is based on an original by Apelles, described in literary sources. It shows king Midas, counselled by Suspicion and Ignorance, an innocent victim accused by Calumny and Fraud, Deception and Spite. On the left, Repentance looks at the naked Truth gazing to heaven (This is extracted from the companion legend of this painting).

Food for thought: Recent, and current, "populist" revolts and revolutions were, and continue to be, energized by lies. (Though, politely these are referred to as deceptions and recently, in the U.S., re-introduced as "alternative facts"). Populism (often camouflaged as "love of country" or nationalism) prospers politically when lies are linked with "emotions" exploited by aspiring demagogues or oligarchs who scream incessantly, "believe me, I am the one, ... I am, I did, I do, I love you ..., and invoke dogmas of "our" people, "our" country", "them" are a threat ... Such poisons are most toxic when combined with greed and envy and are directed at the ignorant and poor (Ed.).
