PARTISANS OF PSKOV

"The Impassioned Years: Partisans of Pskov", 1975-90 Semen Aronovich Rotnitski (1915-) Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah, USA

In 1581 and 1582, Stephan Bathory, the then Polish king, attacked Pskov during the long Livonian war (1558-1583). Russian resistance was heroic. Pskov enters history again during World War II (1941-1945). Soviet partisans frustrated German army plans and are remembered as USSR heroes. Some assert that "partisans" (in Spanish partido - partidario denotes membership of a particular party) arose in Spain to resist the occupation by Napoleon and soon thereafter emulated by Russians resisting Napoleon's occupation of their land.
