MUSES URANIA AND CALLIOPE

"The Muses Urania and Calliope" (see related A | B | C | D | E), 1634 Simon Vouet (1590-1649) National Gallery of Art, Washigton D.C., United States

Urania was the granddaughter of Uranus, and her mother was a musician. She is an emblem or muse of astronomy. Calliope in Greek mythology stands for "beautiful-voice". In fact, "cali" implies the meaning of beauty, as in California.
