TEMPLE OF JANUS

"Temple of Janus - Ancient engraving"

Saturn paired with Janus (note the bi-frons crowning the structure) stood for past - future or the "cycle of life" about to re-start in January. Akin to Christmas, just before the "New Year", the ancients celebrated Saturnalia in honor and gratitude to Saturn, who was seen as a champion of agriculture and who saturated  humans with honey and nuts. December 25th was reserved for celebrations of the birth of Mithra, a deity that stood for peace on earth. Once in power, Christians moved the birth day of Christ to this day (before, the Nativity of Christ was celebrated January 6th, which became the "Epiphany day"). During Saturnalia, celebrants shared sweets, nuts and lit candles - now also symbols of Christmas.
