"Trident"
"Trident", an emblem of Ukrainian nationhood. The emblem is ancient, it appeared in coinage from Kyiv one millennium ago. It is likely that the emblem derives from that of Poseidon (Neptune), an ancestry deserving more scholarly attention. Notably, the Russian imperialists, then the communists, and more recently Putin's Russian chauvinists, propagate the notion that the trident is a nazi - Ukrainian anti-Russian emblem. During Russian subjugation of Ukraine, display of a trident was a criminal offense.
There is a comic dimension to the clumsy efforts of Russians to erase the existence of a Ukrainian nationality - statues of Poseidon or Neptune, instead of holding their symbol, the trident, held a stick (the trident was amputated). In art museums with classic depictions of Poseidon, the naivete and stupidity of Russian chauvinists, to obstruct reality, was further exposed by labels distorting history. In any case, the links of Ukraine with Poseidon or Neptune are vast and are mostly evident in the nature of the name TARAS, frequent in Ukraine but not elsewhere.
