"Fragment - relief of two horses and a hand (presumed briddle and chariot) - from the Augustan era " Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

This sort of sculpture can be called "bas-relief" implying that the "sculpture" elements remain attached to their solid background. Strictly speaking, relief points to Latin relevo (raise) as in elevate - in current Spanish relieve and relevo denote relay or replace and relief. Abundant examples of reliefs are found in decorated sarcophagi (sarco-flesh as in sarcoma and phagus - to consume as when swallowing). The image of two horses and a hand holding reins (formerly painted) suggests that a chariot driver is engaged in controlling the horses through their bridles.

Note: do the terms bridles and brides reflect related notions?
