"Portrait bust of either Alcibiades or a Greek athlete Polydamas of Skotoussa (5th c BC) (known as Alcibiades) (profile)", 337 BC Roman copy of a bust perhaps by Lysippus Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

Roman copy of a Greek original depicting Alcibiades - a prominent Athenian orator who played an important role during the Peloponnesian War as a military commander and later as a politician. He was close to Socrates. As a major actor in the history of his time he captured the imagination of his contemporariesб which translated into the perpetuation of his memory through an abundance of his representations in thousands of sculptures akin to the presented here. In essence, he is a heroic figure.

Alternatively, this sculpture is a Roman copy of a bust by Lysippus of a Greek athlete, Polydamas of Skotoussa who in the 5th c. BC won much admiration in Olympia. The popularity reflected in the large number of this work across the Roman Empire may reflect the admiration for Lysippus.
