"Wounded Amazon (Roman copy), 1st century A.D." (see related A | B | C) from an original by Pheidias or Phidias copy from Palatine Museum, Rome, Italy
The original was created by Phidias for the sanctuary of Artemis at Ephesus. Since there were many versions of a wounded amazon, a competition was organized for the choice of the official one. In addition to Phidias, other competitors included Polycletus, Cresilas, and Phradmon. The official sculpture chosen was that done by Polycletus (see related works in Rome and Paris).
