ALLURING LADY EMMA HAMILTON AS VENUS EXPOSED BY CUPID

"Cupid untying the Zone (belt or girdle) of Venus (previously known as "A Nymph and Cupid")", 1784 Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) Hermitage Museum, Petersburg, Russia

A signed copy by Reynolds made for Prince Gregory Potemkin from a 1784 original. The model is the future Lady Hamilton, then known only as "Miss Emily" and thought to be a courtesan employed by the famous madam Charlotte Hayes. Miss Emily was also known as Miss Potts, Warren, or Bertie. At that time she posed both for Joshua Reynolds and George Romney. It was the start of the meteoric rise of the fame of Emma later known as Lady Hamilton. There also is a reminder of her beauty in a rose named after her. Fragments of her story are found in her multiple representations in this website (see related).
