Like other concepts concerned with vital subjects, TONGUE, ~GLOSS~, ~LING~, and ~GLUT~ give rise to a PLEXUS of word-ideas rooted in mythology, as well as to names for comPLEX functions and structures.

We explore elsewhere THROAT, PHARYNX, FAUCES or GARGANTA, and GARGLING, which refers to sounds of liquids and air mixing in the oro-pharynx. The oro-pharynx or FAUCES, which are like a FAUCET or a canal or GORGE - notions found in enGORGED, inGURGITating, reGURGITation (VOMITing) reaching toward Blech, Belly, Gut, as well as Abdomen, Abduct, Stoma, Stomach, Gastric, Gastroschisis, Omphale, Omphalocele - notions that are explored elsewhere.
Imbibing requires coordinated actions by lips, pharynx, tongue or "glosso" and epiglottis, which make the fluid glide smoothly and free from gargles, thus glissade in a similar manner to a musical "glissando"
Ingurgitating alcohol induces regurgitation and vomitting
The tongue is needed for SWALLOWing or deGLUTion. In humans, other tongue or LINGUAL functions concern LANGUAGE and impact LINGUISTICS. In Greek and Slavic is GLOSSA pointing to GLOSSARY, while Yenzyk and Yesyk which denote both language and tongue as in Spanish LENGUA and LENGUAGE.
Vow by blood letting from the tongue
Imbibing to ebriety can induce imbecilic behavior
Love of eating has to do with GOURMAND and GOURMET. Excessive eating may be due to a GARGANTUAN appetite, a prototype popularized by Rabelais, who wrote about GARAGANTUA. Gargantua points to GARGLE and to GORGE. GARGANTUA was a GLUTTON who had the habot of DEGLUTTING plump Frenchmen living near Rouen. Gargantua was killed by some good Bishop, and since then, there are no reports of gargantuan giants roaming France. What persists to this day are some people with a GARGANTUAN or excessive love for GORGING on FRENCH fries, a source of GLUTEN and, therefore, of GLUCOSE. A current epidemic of GORGING harms the health of many otherwise GORGEOUS people. Obesity is a disease that deforms, and its victims may appear to some as being GORY creatures. Most mammals lick their young, and some humans engage in cunniLINGus, while others use their tongues to preach, but we only can GLOSS over these subjects. Note that modern GLUTTONS no longer GORGE on Frenchmen - instead, they GORGE on french fries and other GLUTENS. It is fallacious to say that most GOURMET or GOURMANDS become GLUTTONS or ENGORGED from GORGING on GLUE, GLUTENS, GLUCOSE, or other GLYCOGENIC cargohydrates. In fact, very few GOURMANDS look like GARGOYLES. Notably, GAR and not GOR seems to indicate a closer link of GARGOYLE with GARGANTA, Spanish for throat, a topic toched upon below. In any case, without a healthy GULLET and a sturdy EPIGLOTTIS it is not possible to become a GARgantua nor a GARgoyle. Mechanistically, note that as tongue moves backward, it squeezes the nutrients toward the epiglottis, a flap or valve like lid, which covers the entrance to the larynx, thus preventing food from entering the respiratory system. This function is the essence of the FAUCET like FAUCES, Spanish for PHARYNX and in vernacular GARganta. In Anglophilic terms, we know of GARGLE.
A sign of megalomania may be megaloglossia or "talking too much". Macroglossia may be a clinical sign of some serious dysmorphologic syndromes
Those who preach may suffer martyrdom, including glossectomy, as poor St. Leivin did
Tongues move like SNAKES and can be used for SNEAKY purposes. The ancients created the GORGON, who had snakes for hair and was quite deadly. GORGON, GORGE, GORE also point to JARGON. Notably, the obese suffer not only from being ENGORGED but also from JARGO words being used in pejorative ways to degrade them.

From Roman sayings, it is clear that the ancients viewed the tongue as a menace. Some of their views could be summarized as

"Domitus Glossa"
(Tame your tongue)

Others noted that by talking too much we earn our enemies or that by eating too much we dig our own graves.
Some sneaky tongues wag like snakes
Note the epiglottis at the base of the tongue
