VALGUS - VARUS
~ VALGUS id+ | BENT OUTWARD |
id+ | BOWED LEGS implies kness away |
note confusing terminology - in paired structures as the
great toe or hallux - hallux valgus or "bunion"
denotes a great toe pointing "away" from the other
but if described singly such a toe would also
point away from the midline of the foot and body -
however, if the hallux points "inward" that is an
instance of "hallux varus" then the tip points
toward the midline of the body but away from the
axis of the foot - such a toe could be called
hallux valgus in terms of the axis of the foot or
hallux varus in terms of the axis of the body
note the same confusion may arise regarding
"bowed legs" or genu varum or varus
depending if the label refers to the end of the
femur or the end of the tibia in relation to the knee
genu valgus if the femurs point away from each other
or in vernacular "bowed legs" as in ()
genu varus or "knock knees" asin )(
