Mr. Digby was shocked by the death of  his wife in her sleep. He intended the painting as a memorial and wrote
 
 " ... when I goe to my bedside ...
me thinkes I see her dead indeed ...
van Dyck hath altered or added nothing about it,
exepting only a rose lying upon the heeme of the sheet ...".
