"Arch of Janus in Rome" (see related A), c.400 CE Rome, Italy

Believe it or not, many of us remember and hale Janus when we say "Happy New Year", that is pointing to Janus, the costodian of the Universe. Janus reminds us that the future stands on the past - often he is represented as a "bi-frons", past-present or double faced. Ponder if the current generation follows these principles, but apparently not! - we forge ahead destroying the atmosphere, or more precisely, the biosphere (use these terms as search words and see what you find in Pandora - it may open your eyes). 

The Arch of Janus illuminates several perspectives. 

It represents a rather unique surviving example of a quadrifrons arch. This monumantal quadrangle stood as a cross road and on top of the cloaca "maxima". Search for cloaca and you may learn something you don't know. Not far away there is another famous Roman "attraction" called "Bocca della Verita", a lid that once covered the access to the cloaca. There is some poetic pradox in this association - perhaps the Romans disposed of the veritas (truth) through the mouth of a drain cover (representing the diety Oceanus). For more look up bocca and it will lead you to mouth, lip ... and be careful with those who offer you "lip service" for they may be offering a cloaca.
