"Clorinde befreit Olindo und Sophronia vom Scheiterhaufen - Clorinde freed Olindo and Sophronia from the pyre " (see related A | B | C), 1853 / 56 Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) Neue Pinakothek, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

This is one of the many stories glorifying the 1099 war by Christians against the Saracens to "free" Jerusalem from Muslim rule. The story is known as "Gerusalemme Liberata" - the story Jerusalem Liberated is by Torquato Tasso and was published in 1581. Tancred (a Christian hero) fell in love with Clorinda (a Saracen woman worrier). At first, he refused to fight her ... and so on. In essence, Saracen maidens got involved with Christian knights and ended by converting to Christianity (more or less) - Eventually Tancred killed Clorinda but she converted just before dying.

Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix paintings emphasize a realistic romantic style and grandiose themes often requiring grandiose size paintings. Some experts say he was the son of Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (1754-1838), the Minister of Foreign not only of Napoleon I but of King Louis after each time Napoleon fell. Talleyrand was his protector. It is not an exaggeration to say that Delaroix paintings represent an anthology and gallery of heroic historic events.

N.B. (Ed.) It is fair to say that this story and painting is representative of religious propaganda.
