BACCHUS or DIONYSUS WERE NOT DRUNKARDS

"Baccus Baco Bacchus also known as Dionysus " (see related A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M), 1609 Michelangelo Merisi (known as Caravaggio) (1571-1610) Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

SYMBOL of HUMAN NATURE - Dionysus or among the Romans, Bacchus, this deity also known as ELEUTHERIOS or LIBERATOR, is among the hardest mythic figures to interpret and fully grasp.

It is most regrettable that the profound hate of Christians toward pagan civilizations, distorted the meaning of Dionysus and his emblematic representation of each human soul seeking to be free, to be itself, to express feelings and emotions uninhibited by those of others. At the time, wine was not to be abused by humans - nor was drunkenness, but no so among the barbarians who became the first Christians. Today, among Northern Europeans where puritanism thrived the most, alcoholism is likewise more prevalent that among "Mediterranean" cultures. Note the multiple companion pages that describe further the complex nature represented by Dionysus.
